I don't feel much need to for imaginary people. I'm sure that makes me sound like some awful caricature of a utilitarian, in a Dickens novel, but basically: bah, humbug.

But, of course, it takes much less time to watch a movie than to read a novel. So it's not hard to see why someone who doesn't find the time to read novels might turn to film to satisfy a desire for fiction.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16175404.post-90865931455061151762014-01-08T08:59:29.404-08:002014-01-08T08:59:29.404-08:00I am probably not a very good representative male,...I am probably not a very good representative male, but my reading preferences do follow the statistical norm for men.

When I say I like to read in order to learn, it's not just to learn any old thing. I understand that I can learn something from reading fiction. The point is that I have particular subjects I want to learn about or particular questions I am trying to answer. And in my case most of those subjects are subjects one could spend a life time studying, without gaining complete mastery. I would much rather spend my time reading non-fiction in pursuit of those informal research projects than pick up a good novel, at least most of the time.

I am a fairly slow reader and due to health issues, I have a much more limited amount of energy than before. Why wouldn't I spend my scarce reading time on the reading which I find most engaging?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16175404.post-82868935771892147762013-06-05T14:34:45.337-07:002013-06-05T14:34:45.337-07:00Ha ha thanks Mary! I was looking forward to The Marriage Plot immensely, and I definitely enjoyed it, but I didn't LOVE it. I admired it, certainly. At the festival I thought he was a great speaker, warm and lively and quite generous. The session he did with Emily Perkins, chaired by Jolisa Gracewood, I enjoyed in particular. Great questions, great conversation, such a rapport between teh three people on stage. A delight.Rachael Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07690377694600952816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16175404.post-78266839682369884822012-05-29T21:59:15.194-07:002012-05-29T21:59:15.194-07:00I would love to know what you thought of Jeffrey E...I would love to know what you thought of Jeffrey Eugenides. Alas, my US publisher didn't feel Magpie Hall was a suitable follow up to The Sound of Butterflies in the US market, so it's not available there yet. It looks as though it will soon be available as an e-book (if it's not already) on Amazon. It arrived two days ago and I cannot put it down! I wish it was more readily available in the U.S. since I will selfishly hoard my copy but want to recommend it to everyone, especially writer friends. Any plans for international publishing? I love everything about the book (I'm about two thirds through), and enjoyed reading your blog posts about its creation. And I'm a swing dancer too! :) Next in my TBR pile is The Sound of Butterflies, which I was able to get on my Kindle.
