I didn't read as many books as I would have liked in this year, and I have a pile of gems sitting on my bedside table that I know I will love (or at least like a lot), but here are the best of the ones I did read in 2008.

I have just noticed that all these books are written by women. Interesting.
Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite all time reads.
Here is my SS post
Kill Word Verification
I didn't read as many books as I wanted to this year either. Never seems to be enough hours in the day.
Happy Sunday!
Did you enjoy One Good Turn? I love Kate Atkinson's books, but I felt like there was a better book fighting to get out of that one.
Yes I enjoyed it, that's how it made it into my top 5! I was excited about her latest, but haven't heard great things about it and just haven't been compelled to pick it up. One Good Turn was a nice surprise for me - i started reading it in the bookshop and couldn't put it down. It wasn't perfect - I think she rammed a few motifs and themes a bit hard - but was a good book nonetheless.
Regarding your comment about these being all women authors, I don't find that unusual. When I review the last 500 novels on my reading log, 83% were male authors: there was nothing conscious in this, but 'I think we all read in part searching for some type of shared experience to help us understand our own lives' (?) thus it is not surprising that a reader pursues more of their own gender authors than otherwise.
For the same reason I also mainly read books existing in our western cultures, with probably only one in twenty or so outside of this. Plus the number of NZ novels I read, would proportionately far outweigh non-NZ authors. My consistently favourite authors, that is book after book still capturing me, are Maurice Gee and Ian McEwan
I'm reading Wuthering Heights too!
Thanks Rachael, shall add some of those to my TBR pile of 09! ( that sounds so far away!)
I like this author, I am reading wuthering heights and its really good.
